We lost a very special member of the Mustang community this past March! George Coombs was one of the first Renegade members, because of his love for life and the Mustang! George and his wife Mary joined Kitsap Mustang Club in 1989! George was their club President in 1992 and held the Parade Chairman position for Kitsap Mustang Club for many years before his health got the better of him in his later years! However, that did not deter him from participating in as many Mustang shows as he could with his son-in-law Phil! George was always dragging Phil to the KMC Roadside clean-up to see if they could really find anything of use in the trash they were picking up, plus attending as many parades and Mustang/Ford car shows throughout the year and even putting his 35th Anniversary GT Convertible on the Dyno machine at the show in Richland, you would not believe the grin on George’s face the rest of the day, think it lasted a whole month or more! When George joined the Mustang community he was the original owner of a Candy Apple Red 1966 Mustang Coupe, with Red Pony Interior. It sported a 200 motor with C-4 transmission. Special features included the Pony interior and a seat belt light. George purchased their little red Mustang from Kerr Motors on 4th Street in Bremerton, Brand New, although George at the time was suppose to be purchasing a Ford Falcon as the Family car (very long story there and it’s been passed down through the years!) But, I think that Candy Apple Red and the sporty looking Mustang caught George’s eye, he was in hot water with Mary all those years, however we did see Mary at a few parades, especially the Bremerton Armed Forces day parade! So, I don’t think he messed up that bad getting that Red Mustang, it had a backseat for the kids!
George was born in Concord, NH to Richard & Mildred (Lauder) Coombs. He married Mary Ann Coombs in 1945 in St. Paul, Minn. He served 20 years in the Navy and later was a machinist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until his retirement in 1984. Plus, I didn’t know this but George enjoyed skiing too and enjoyed teaching his family to ski too!
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary in 1999 and sister Nancy. He is survived by his son Richard Coombs (Cynthia); daughter Pam Ramsey (Phil, who most of us have seen with George these last few years, showing off the White 1999 – 35th Anniversary GT Convertible, sporting the personalized license plate R35ANV in memory of Mary), grandchildren, Dante (Nikki), Tomi (Todd), Sean, Jenny (Jim), Mindy (Steve) and Kimi; great-grandchildren, Amber, Gavin, Meagan, Jocelyn, T.J., Ellie and Jay.
Sadly, George passed away this past March 2006 at the young age of 82 and is on his way to join his beloved Mary in heaven. Rest in peace George, you will always be in our thoughts and prayers and know that the Ramsey’s are taking great care of your beautiful 35th Anniversary Stang and there has even been a Modification!
